Pregnancy and Back Pain
(Volume 1 Issue 1 May 2001)

Lots of pregnant women come along to Mulberry House for the very popular yoga classes run by Caitlin Heavey specifically for mums to be. As a result of this us osteopaths get to see quite a lot of these ladies who find that the whole pregnancy experience can put quite a strain on the system.

For some bizarre reason women are often told that back pain is an expected part of pregnancy and they should just put up with it until it's all over. That's rubbish! You certainly do not have to suffer.

It is true that if you have had a history of back problems then the shifting stresses and strains of pregnancy will probably highlight the problem again but usually pregnant women are very easy to treat. Osteopaths are more used to treating people that are stiff and very inflexible but in pregnancy the opposite is more of a problem. Joints become increasingly flexible and this can put more and more strain on the muscles and other soft tissues. From an osteopathic point of view these tissues are often easier to treat and pregnant women tend to respond very quickly to treatment. Of course it is even better when you are following a sensible exercise regime throughout the pregnancy such as the yoga course.

Also, have you noticed that moving house and decorating, which in themselves often result in a visit to an osteopath, seem to be almost inevitably linked with pregnancy!
